Laboratory Equipment

The scientific object of Fluid Mechanics & Turbomachinery Laboratory presupposes leading experimental and computational equipment, like measurement instruments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes. FM&T Lab have scientific instruments to study various kinds of flows, specially those using Laser. Moreover, it includes a number of wokstations, PC' s, and relative equipment to cover the needs for education and research. Finally, it has been provided or developed CFD codes, as well as image processing software.  

Laboratory of Fluid Mechanics & Turbomachines includes the following major equipments:

Experimental Equipment

  • Subsonic wind tunnel with a 50x70x300cm working session and speed up to 30 m/s


  • 1-channel Laser Doppler Anemometer with signal processing system


  • Particle Image Velocimeter with digital camera and inhouse image processing software


  • 2-channel Hot Wire Anemometer with signal processing system
  • 1-channel Phase Doppler Particle Anemometer with signal processing system
  • Schlieren for compressible flow visualization
  • Flow Visualization system with video camera and frames printer

Software Packages


Code DIAN3D is a powerful inhouse computational fluid dynamics package, that is useful to regular students and effective to the expert researchers. The tree-dimensional code solves elliptic and parabolic Euler flows with or without turbulence and incorporates Lagrangean particle dynamics. The code includes also heat transfer, chemical reactions, coal combustion, magnetic induction, radiation, etc.


The commercial computational fluid dynamics package FLUENT is used for simulations of many applied fluid flow and heat transfer problems for the needs of Laboratory research projects and education.


The commercial computational fluid dynamics package PHOENICS is used for the simulation of melting glass flow, the chemical vapour deposition with Laser, furnace combustion, and natural convection with or with out thermal radiation.


The very known code TEACH which was developed from the computational fluid dynamics research team of Imperial College of London University. Lab. FM&T use the 2D and 3D version of the code, while a member of the Lab. was also a member of the developed team.

Image Processing

With analoge-to-digital cart for digitizing of the analoge signal of video-images. All informations are stored in RAM memory, and a FFT-Cross Correlation software makes the image processing.
