Determination of seismic forces on industrial structures and critical components and preparation of experiments

Objectives


The objectives of this workpackage (WP2) are the following:

  1. Development of systematic procedures to calculate seismic action on tanks, pressure vessels and piping, using advanced analysis methods. The methodology will take into account the dynamic interaction between the structure and its flexible support system, and – if applicable – the dynamic interaction between the container and the enclosed liquid.

  2. Investigation of the effects of nonlinear support system response on the seismic behaviour of pressure vessels and piping; examination of the influence of dissipative support systems towards seismic force reduction.

  3. Determination of cyclic loading earthquake action on selected critical components, considering strong seismic input, and employing the above analysis procedures. Specification of specimen geometry to be tested in the subsequent experimental program together with the detailed specification of base material and welding procedures.
